INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE.
RATES TO BE RAISED. MADRID, October 15., The International Postal Conference will probably last a further six weeks. The agenda includes 2,000 propositions, but tlie principal task of the conference is to readjust international postal rates owing to the extraordinary differences in the exchanges of the countries within the Poßtal Union, whereby the face value of Btamps bear no relation to money values. 'Jhe conference is endeavouring to find a solution by adopting the gold franc as a standard whereby all international postages -will be regulated, thus equalising values. It in also proposed to raise all international postages to meet the increased cost of postal services. Mr. Oxenham has been authorised to represent the Common wealth at the world conference • concerning cable, tele- j graph, and wireless services, and which will probably be held early in 1021, following the preliminary conference of Allies only, which is now sitting at Washington. Mr. Oxenham ie visiting London in November to endeavour to settle the dispute, between Australia and the Qrymt Company concerning the mail contract.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) I tod NiZ. Cable.}. 1
