He fenced all right until he reached the last obstacle, | which he struck, and came to grief. . j Mr. R. Sheath has decided not to persevere with Fabrtqunttc, and she will probably be retired to the stud. So far no mate has ; been chosen for the daughter of Vasco. Malurys, which ran second In the A.J.C. Derby only cost SOgns as a yearling, while Erasmus, which ran third, brought lOOOgns in the sale rlns. Middlemark was schooled over eight hurdles at Ellerslie on Thursday morning, Oak Abbey accompanying him over the flrst four. Both fenced without mistake. Deviation knocked himself while running In the paddock, and in consequence has had an easy time of It for a few weeks. He Is all right again, and is now doing steady work. Miss Muriel got cast in her box on the eve of the Avondale Meeting, and in consequence was unable to race at the fixture. The fllly is making good progress towards recovery. Although there were eight starters in th- ■ Hastings 'Stakes It was generally considered to be a match between Mermln and Fulsome, and out of the £4817 Invested the. pair carried i 51567. ■Reports from a Southern racing centre I state that a gentle-man who has never been on a racecourse In his life was recently elected to the committee of the local turf club. Arion, one of the competitors in the Flaxmere Hack Handicap. run at the Hawke's Bay spring meeting, would have returned n dividend of about £800 had he been successful. The date of the closing of the acceptances for the second aay of the Whangarel J.C.. Meeting has been altered to 5. p.m. on Thursday, the 14th Inst., not Friday, the I,3th inst., as formerly advertised. Lord Astolat had a lot of friends in .Auckland for the Flaxmere Hack 1-lundl-ean. which he won lit Hastings on Wednesday, and the price he returned came as something of a surprise. .A. -T. Mc-FHnn came North after riding at Hawke's Kay, anil leaves again on Sun day for Dunedin, where he has engagements to fulfll at the Dunedin Jockey ■Club meeting. It is uot often Auckland horsemen journey so far South. 'H. 'Gray had five rides at the .Hawke's ■Bay meeting on "Wednesa-ay, for two firsts, two seconds and one third. Notwithstanding that four dividends were returned our of flve investments, a sovereign on each of i his mounts during the afternoon would have resulted in a loss of 12.'. .In running second in the Flying Handicap at Hastings on Wednesday. Surveyor | was responsible for ,i fairly good performance. Mc had the steadier of 0.10 in the saddle, and r:in Iloucn, to which be was ■ conceding 331b, to a lenirth. Itouen. returned a price a bit above expectations. Humbug was sent out an odds-on favour- : Ite for the Hawke's IBay •Guineas, with iDun second choice, and the Stead bracket,. IDelight and TruPhful, next best oai'ked. i these three numbers tarrying over two-1 thirds of the total invested. ' | After racing on the opening day of the | Avondale Meeting Jolly Princess got into some wire while being indulged In a run in the paddock, and could not fulfll her engagement in the Avondale Guineas. The filly is , all right again, and is doing pace work at Ellerslie. ■Aureate, the full-uieter to .Desert Gold, made her first appearance under silk- on Wednesday last, when she was saddled up to contest the Hastings Stakes. Her showIng w»s not an impressive one, for none of the accounts mention her as ever being prominent, and she eventually finished out Of a »'»«• i Mr. W 0. Stead started two in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, Delisrht whi<~b ran second, and Truthful, a fllly by Dcmor.then**, .from Lily White. The latter was evidently started to ensure a sound pace in the hope of breaking up Humbug, but although the fllly made the running she. never 'had Humbug in trouble, and the sou of ADsnrd won very easily at the finish, j I Mr. A. E. Tattley sent Glen Canny South on Thursday, in charge of W. Smith. The son of Pistol Is to fulfil his engagement nt the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, and will then ho taken on to Ricearton to contest the N.Z. Cup. Glen Canny was very well when he left Auckland, and despite his Increased poundage is sure to run prominently in the Ricearton two-mile race. ! I Mormin followed up his victory in the Avondale Stakes by winning the Hastings Stakes on Wednesday in somewhat easy fashion, and looks like nelng a colt above the average. Mermin is the second youngster to win the first two classical two-yenr-old races of the season, the Avondale stakes nitd Hastings Stakes, the only other to accomplish that task being lElyslan, which won in 1008. The opinion expressed lo the writer by J. H. JefTerd. the trainer of Humbug, regarding the defeat of the colt by Duo in the Wanganui Guineas, was borne out by the running in the Ilawke's Bay classic event, for Mr. Williams' colt won very easily. Duo, ; the Wnnganui winner, had to put up a pen- i alty. which brought his weight up to 0.0. ! but he was only conceding Humbug 41b. and i if the Wnngnnul running had been true this ! would have hardly brought them together. Those who witnessed the race state that Humbuy won with a lot in hand on Wednesday, and gave the impression that the Derby distance would not trouble him. The son of Absurd is not engaged in the Wellington Champion Plate, which is a matter for j regret, for his presence would have greatly added to the Interest of the event. < The ex-New Zealander, Mr. E. J. Watt, j appears to have got hold of a flrst-clase performer in Pershore. the son of All Black ' showing that his Metropolitan Handicap success was no fluke by winning the Sydney njindictip on the third dov of the A..J.C .Meeting under 8.12, a rise" of 181b on the poundage he carried In the Metropolitan. Aβ a two-yenr-old Perahore showed most promising form, winning once and running second once In (our starts. In the spring of his three-year-old career he was considered a Derby possibility, but hie four starts at that age were resnltlees. On Saturday laet he wae third in the Spring Stakes to the dead-heaters, Kennaquhalr and Poitrel, following this up by winning the Metropolitan Handicap, one of the A.J.C.'s biggest races, and the Sydney Handicap on Wednesday. Perehore was weighted at 8.1 in the Melbonrne Cnp. and has earned a 101b penalty, which makes his poundage 8.11. j
Mr. Tom Stewart has decided to mate his two mares Demoiselle and Wee Olga with MaTblc Arch. In the South Glen Cann.v. Tenterfleld. and Royal Star are the ruling favourites for the New Zealand Cup. In Christcbtirch Trlx Pointer is a staunch favourite for tbe New Zealand Trotting Cup. Mllitaire should be worth following in his engagements at the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeetlng. J Jamieson returned home with Mr. McDonald's horses immediately on the conclusion of the Avondale Meeting. Tenterfleld. by winning the Spring Handicap at the Hawke's 'Bay meeting on Wednesday, lias earned a 71b penalty for the CN'.Z. Cup, which makes his weight 8.1. IH. Robinson went South to ride Duo In th* Hawke's Bay Guineas, at the Hawke 8 Bay meetinc on Wednesoay. this being the only ride he bad at tbe fixture. At .the recent Cairns (Queensland) Show ■Meeting the whole of the horses handicapped for one of the events were withdrawn before the acceptar.ee hour. ' The New Zealand Trotting Cup candidate Dean Dillon, which has been suffering from cold, lias fully recovered, and is doing j useful work again. Mr. Kembnll's New Zealand Cup candidate Tenterfleld is racing into form, and despite his 71b penalty looks certain to run well. Ills staying ability is unquestioned. i Aeon, which ran third in the fillies' race. ! the Glmcrack Stakes, at the A.J.C. Spring ' Meettnc. is owned by Mr. E. J. Watt, and is by Wolawa from Eona. In the light of recent events it will be I Interesting to sec what programme U ' mapped out for Amythas. The son of Demosthenes Is cnguged In the Wellington Champion Plate, in which Arrowsmlth, also ] figures. I Toa Tana. which won the Juvenile Handicap at Hastings on Wednesday, is one of the team trained by L. Wilson for the executors of the late Mr. W. J. Douclas, and Is by Mountain Knight from Fairy Gold. The defeat of Poitrel by Greenstead In the Craven Plnte, run at Uandwlck on Wednesday, made the first occasion on which he has been beaten in a welght-for-age event in Australia. Tbe race was run at a solid pace, the time (2.4J> equalling Cetlgne's Australasian record. It may be mentioned that the Craven Plate was the event in which Desert Gold was beaten out of a place for the flrst time in her career. THE "MITCHELSON CUP. Although the weights for the Mitehelson Cup were not due until Monday, the 11th inst., Mr. F. J. McManemin issued his adjustments yesterday, which action was greatly appreciated by owners. The performances of Gaziquc at the Avondale Meeting earned him pride of place, but he ■ has not been overburdened, and with O.ii must be given a great chance. I'ucle Ned is nicely treated with 0.2, and Volo also has I nothing to complain of. From the topweights down to the 8.0 division. Some Buy 11. 8.7, 'Nobleman 8.3, and Lovematch 8.0 i read the best, while In the lower class there are quite a number of possibilities. I-ord Kenliworth has been let loose with 6.12. Mr. McManemin evidently holding the opinion that he is not likely to stay. His l running of late has certainly been very disappointing, but it has to be remembered that last time be raced at EUerslle he bad 8.(1 in tbe saddle over a mile, and at Avondale last week was weighted at 5.2. running unplaced, however, on both occasions. If ever be is going to , win a big race he hss been given every opportunity on this occasion. Gasbag has been given a chance, and Sir Ralph. Blue Cross, and Woody Glen read the best of the C.7 division. TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. CANT.KRBUISY. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star."> CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The two-year-olda arc now being hurried along but 'so fax nothing startling stands out amongst the P.iocarton juveniles. No i doubt many will need time to develop, and later in the season may pay their waj handsomely. Dame Straightlace shows promise, and'lied Hind looks also a good one. but is unsound. I A fair amount of interest was taken in the Kurow Meeting held yesterday. The racing throughout was full of interest, and the class of horses engaged well above the average. Bengcroop showed pood form in winning the Kurow Handicap, defeating I three other tNew Zealand Cup condldntes in Badlnl, Rose Pink, and -lack Symons. The winner was receiving 4.'!lb from Radial, while in the Ricearton race only 1611> separates the pair. This difference is certainly in Radial's favour, and should be sufficient to reverse the placings. Kengeroop. hmvever, Is more than useful, and Southlanders give him a chance in the two mile race. j Corn Uiggs and Barley Uigs. owned by I Mr. W. Gardiner, the Timaru sportsman. I each won a race at Kurow. showing useful form. The former especially is a useful 1 sort, and will be Tieard of again shortly. 1 Miss Camouflage looks like -developing into a high-class sprinter. Her win at Kurow was full of merit, and the opposition was not nearly strong enough to fully extend her. San Sebastian out-jumped the opposition in the Waitangi .Steeplechase, and represented much better class than the rest of the field. There was a lot of money for Orange Bitters in the Hakataramea Welter, hut he had no chance with Barley Rigs, which won decisively. «In the Belfleld Handicap ■Orange Bitters carried 191b overweight, and easily silenced the favourite, Bon Spec, ] which, is not solid. ■ ! Brackenfield haft not shown bis accustomed brilliancy of late, and his owner thought a change of owners might have the desired result. j A. Ellis is to ride Royal Star In the New Zealand Cup. G. Young will ride Bonnie 1 Mold. W. McDonald's team, including Glendower. Some Ivid, Listening Post, and Castellon .are all looking in great heart, and should collect some stake money between them during the next few months. Red Hind, by Autumnus—Kirriemuir. has cone wrong, and will r.o-t.be taken 1o the : Dnnedln Meeting. Nightraider and Winter , Wind will represent Sir George ClWori, and, both look like doing good for the stable. The hurdler Mannish has broken down, nnd will be blistered and turned out for a length} , spell. The death occurred in Reefton the other day of Edward Griffen. n well-known trainer some years ago. For a time he was with the late W. C. Webb and E. Cutts. ard later trained British Lion and many other good ones. For many years past he has ; been caretaker of the Reefton Ta-cecourso. and the good condition of the course and appointments was largely due to Ills efforts. Checkmate is said to be going on the right way at Invercargill. This horse has undoubted speed, and with experience will produce It -with the colours up. ; War March, which was bought for £100 ! some little time ago. was sold in Dunedin ! the othor day for £20. i Satisfaction, oho of-C. The acceptances for the opening day of the Whangarei Racing Club's annual race meeting, which takes place on the Avondale course on Wednesday next, are much better than even the most optimistic expected, and the club are aesured of a record meeting. Owing to the size of the fields it has been deemed necessary to make an early start, and the first race has been timed to start at 11 a.m. A special train service haa been arranged for, particulars of which are advertised.
