The Commission set up to inquire into the circumstances which led to the j 1 resignation of Detective-Sergeant Michael Mason, and the allegations made by| Masfm against the police administration | in Wellington, was concluded yesterday.! Mr. Justice Stringer presided, and with! him on tlie Bench was Superintendent A. 11. Wright, of Auckland. evidence , had been heard at considerable length the commission reserved its decision. The inquiry is a sequel to the prosecution "of two men, John Millanta and Krnest Miles, who were jointly charged i with the tiioft of a number of eanitary pans belonging to the Petone Borough [Council. Detective-Sergeant Mason in- ! vestigated the case, and during the preliminary hearing in the Magistrate's Court " 'ho protested against being instructed to swear informations against the accused, as he had reason to believe . that the real culprit was a triird man. The upshot was that Mason wa3 officially called upon to explain his conduct; and ; with a view to ensuring a full inquiry ' into the circumstances of the case, he 'resigned bis position. Millanta and ; Miles were sent up for trial in the Supreme Court, but were both acquitted by the jury..
