A STARTLED PSYCHE.
PEEPING TOM" AT Y.W.C.A. COMMOTION IN UPPER QUEEN STREET. An unrehearsed "Psyche at the Bath" tableau at the Young Women's Christian Association buildings in Upper Queen Street last night had its climax in ; streams, a chase, and the arrest of a married man named William Arthur McMillan (34), who proved to be th« villain of the "Peeping Tom" incident. When McMillan was brought before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., this moaning, charged with having been unlawfully by night on the private premises of the Y.W.C.A., he admitted the impeachment. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann explained that the Pysche of the incident was a young woman who lodged at the Y.W.C.A. About 7.30 p.m. yesterday she was in one of the bathrooms, when she suddenly ' became aware that the lower window sash had been raised a few inches, and 1 saw the face of a man outside who was peering in. Her screams resulted in a general alarm being communicated to the street, and two young men who were ' passing ran to the rear of the building, where they saw the accused moving noise- ! lessly about. Satisfied by hia actions that he was the cause of the commotion , they pounced on him. It was found that , McMillan's boots were unlaced, indicati ing that he had taken them off to play i the role of "Peeping Tom," and had just I put tliem on again. When handed over to a constable McMillan bolted, but wae v chased and re-captured. , The Sub-Inspector added that t'ae mii mates of the Y.W.C.A. had been annoyed for some time past by the nightly prying ■ of some man, or men, and that residents ■ in City Road and the vicinity had made similar complaints. The accused had ! been previously convicted of assault and , indecent exposure, and had got a sentence of a year on each charge. -Iji'-Teply to the magistrate the accused ■ said he was married. Asked if his wife • were living with him he replied that she ' had been for a holiday for two or three weeks, and he had just got a room for her yesterday. He was sentenced to ; three months' hard labour.
