SALARIES OF PROFESSORS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I notice in your columns that (Jniversjty professors propose to aek for Governmental aid in obtaining increased salaries. While realising that the present enhanced cost of living has diminished their real incomes, I feel sure that many people believe, as I do, that as members of the teaching profession professors a-re very well paid. They receive over £700 a year. During that time they receive 22 weeks' vacation, and are eeldom called upon to work more than five hours a day. On the other hand, the stipends of clergymen, who, in many cases, have educational honours just as high as those of the professorß, range from £300 to £400 per year of fifty-two weeke. If any more public money is to be spent on teachers' salaries, surely the teachers in the back-blocks and the lower ' paid secondary school teachere should receive first consideration. —I am, etc., FAIR PLAY.
