THE GRADING QUESTION.

TEACHERS - OPIXWNS. ' The Auckland timncli of the N.Z. Educa. tional Institute met this morning, Mr. 2f. 'H. S. Law presiding.

Grading was the chief subject of discussion, practically tlie whole time of the meeting being given over to its consideration. A protest was entered against the conditions of the rote that is being taken on a proposed Dominion grading scheme, and a further resolntion was passed, as follows:—"That this branch of the X.Z.E.1., whilst supporting the Minister in his desire to compel Boards to use the ■Dominion grading list for promotion within their own districts. Is not in favour of its introduction as a basis of Dominion promotion until an efficient logical system of Dominion appraisement of teachers has been devised."

Several remits for a conference to ha held in the near future were also approved. The most important of these were set ouC as follows: "That the publication setting forth the relative positions of teachers on. the graded list contain all the marks determining that position under the several headings"; "That the X.Z.E.I. expresses Us dissatisfaction with the indiscriminate reduction of groups of Auckland teachers, and instructs the executive to lirlng before the notice of the Minister of "Education the injustice done to certain sections o-: these groups"; "That the Minister for I-Mucatloa be asked to place before the next conference of Inspectors for their decision certain questions (tabulated) with regard to the dua appreciation of the University status in the grading of teachers."

The treasurer reported the greatest cretlit balance the branch has ever had.

The question of a memorial to fallen teachers was to have been discussed by the meeting, but after a short explanation by the chairman regarding subscriptions, consideration was deferred until the nes* meeting in April.
