SOLDIER TEACHERS.

BOARD'S SOUGHT.' Grievances of .retained soldier teachers were submitted to the Education Board last evening by a deputation from the Auckland Returned Soldiers Teachers' Association. Mr. Edward Cfosby, president of the association, set out in detail the several matters for the remedying of which his association wished the Board'? co-opera-tion. Concerning , salaries, the complaint of the deputation was that many teachers before enlistment had received the maximum salary in their grade. It was reasonable to think that such teachers would have been promoted to a higher' grade had they not gone on active service, and therefore soldier teachers should have received an annual increment for each year on' aetivc service. A grievance regarding grading was that many ex-Training College students had been given no credit in quota marks for war service. The third point of issue concerned the handicap on #x-Training College students V' lo were compelled to fulfil certain conditions, which told against them after returning from the war. The attention of the Board wae further drawn to the provi»ions made for soldier teachers under the- superannuation scheme. Their contributions were paid if they had been permanently appointed prior to enlistment. Men who had left the Training College direct were debarred from this, and it was contended , that as a result of war service .those teachers were compelled to wait longer before being retired. The delegation asked the Board also to consider the matter of concessions to returned soldiers. It was contended that they should at least be equal to those granted to men in other departments. A committee was appointed to investigate and to report to the Board in two weeks. The Board's recommendations will then be forwarded to the Education Department.
