THE POPULARITY OF LIPTON.
DEMONSTRATION IN XEW YORK. A crowd of cheering admirers, estimated to number over 10,000, swarmed The Mall ln Central Park, New York, on the evening of August 4, in an effort to shake hands with Sir Thomas Lipton, guest of the city of New York at a formal reception in his honour. It took the hardest sort of work on the part of motor cycle policemen and Teserves to force a way through the throng for Sir Thomas. Mayor Hylan acted officially as host, and ln the intermission of a special concert by the Goldsnian Concert Band, which had as soloists Miss Emily Beglin of the Metropolitan Opera Company, soprano, and Ernest Williams, cornettist, he presented to Sir Thomas a flag of the city. "The object of this gathering," the mayor told him, "is to demonstrate that, although the Shamrock was unable to capture tbe cup, her owner succeeded in winning a sentimental cup of love and admiration from the people of this city. "To you, Sir Thomas, in tbe way of sentimental recompense for your repeated gallant efforts in a sporting event so potently productive of international good feeling, permit mc to offer the love of our citizens by presenting to you this flag of the city." "I've not won tbe cup, but I feel in m. heart that I've won something greater in the goodwill of the American people," Sir Thomas responded. "I would far rathe, have this reception to-night than to win the best cup in the world. My defeat, however, does not make mc downcast, and if all goes well I hope to challenge again. ' His optimism brought another salvo of cheers from the gathering that pressed close around the grand stand.
