MIDDLESEX CHAMPIONS.

DEFEAT OF SURREY. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, August'3o. Middlesex defeated Surrey to-day, and thus eccured the county championship. (A. and N.Z. Cable.) LONDON, August 31. The second day of the match at Lord's between, Middlesex ahd Surrey, which may decide tlio county ckampionehip, was witnessed by 30,000 spectators. Middlesex's first innings had cloeed for 268 (P. F. Warner 79). After a Blow start Surrey scored at a good pace. Sandhu.ni batted for 4h 20in, scoring IC7 (not out). He was in superb form, and hit brilliantly. On his recent form he is the coming batsman for the 1921 test matches. Ducat scored 49 and Fender (captain of Surrey) 30. Fender hit five fours off Durston in the first over he received. Surrey declared after scoring 341 runs for nine wickets, and Fender put in Middlesex, hoping to pick up wickets in the failing light, but when the stumps were d*\vn Middlesex had scored 27 runs withouJ losing a wicket. Lancashire (playing scored 194 runs In the first innings, and have scored 59 runs for no wickete in the second innings. Worcestershire scored 108 runs in the first inningsYorkshire (playing Hampshire) declared after scoring 585 runs for three wickete. Holmes scored 302, the highest individual score of the season. Five teet matches have been arranged for the English tour of the Australians in 1921, viz., at Notingham, on May 28; Lord's, June 11; Leeds, July 2; Manchester, July 23; and the Oval, August 13. The last match Will be played out if a definite decision is necessary." The Board of Control has decided that the admission to the test matches at Lord's and the Oval will be 3/, and at Nottingham, Leeds, and Mancheter 2/6. The charge for the other Australian county matches will be 2/. Mt. Latham, secretary of the Surrey Club, is arranging the Australian programme.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) ~ Mr. J. W. H., T. Middlesex has- only once previously won the county championship since its institution in 1873, having secured the title in 1903. Last year Middlesex was close to the bottom of ihe list, winning only two of the 14 matches played, drawing nine, and losing three, its percentage being 14.28 against the 46.5 of Yorkshire, the winners. •
