RIOTS IN ATHENS.
REACTIONARIES ATTACKED. ATHENS, August 16. Owing to rumours that M: Venizelos was dead, great crowds attacked reac- j tionary strongholds, and wrecked five newspaper offices, a theatre, a cafe, and the sumptuous residence of M. Skouloudis, ex-Premier. The police arrested many reactionary leaders, some for their own protection, and others for complicity in a plot to effect a coup d'etat after 11. Venizeloa' assassination to restore ex-King Constantine. The Government states that it lias proof that the Opposition leaders had been intriguing and j plotting with Constantine in Switzerland for two months. The plotters relied mainly on 1,200 ex-officers, who at present are congregated in Athens, and the absence of the garrison on foreign service. M. Dragoumis, an ex-Premier, was shot when attempting to escape from a military escort. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.) j
