CITY WORKS IN HAND.

CONCRETE PAVING PROGRESS.

Discussing the affairs of the city this morning, the Mayor remarked that things were going along well. The estimates were through for the year, and notice bad been given of the rates to be I struck. Tramway matters had also been '.completed with the local bodies, and the I works policy for the year in connection 'with all committee work was now- well arranged. "The year," said Mr. Gunson, "promises to be a busy one for the Council, • and tormorrow evening very important questions relating to the electricity loan will be submitted. In the meantime the present plant coming to hand, and the extensions already provided for, will keep that department busy. In the street works constant delays are arising with material, notwithstanding which fa*? progress is being made. Concreting work ie at present going on in Ponsonby Road, and the Manukau Road, Parnell, is nearing completion. Following this the gang there will be transferred to the concrete paving work in the Remuera Road. The Works Committee is aware of the fact that this road is not in good order, but in view of the almost immediate start on that thoroughfare of paving operations ! very little is being expended there at pre--1 sent. The Ponsonby Road and the Remuera work will fully tax the Council's resources in the matter of permanent paving for the current year, and nothing more can be undertaken until these two works are out of hand. At the sams time Manukau Road, Epsom, for which new tram rails are on order, is an urgent work, and it is just possible that the Works Committee may rearrange the present programme with a view to making a start with that road as eooji a? possible. This road is in even worse condition than the two other roads T have mentioned. This matter will, however, be largely determined by the date of arrival of the tram rails, as the track for the whole .length of the MannlJiu Road has to be replaced with heavier rails."
