THE MEAT PROBLEM,

SUGGESTED OUTLET.

SEQUEL TO COMMONWEALTH

DROUGHT.

Several phases of the drought in the Commonwealth were brought before delegates at the farmers' Union Conference yesterday by Mr. Jones, M.P., of the South. Island, who recently returned from a visit to Australia. One of the most interesting of these, so far as this Dominion is concerned, although unfortunate for Australia, is the fact that they only have one million carcase* in Victoria, and half a million in New South Wales, the total comprising the extent of their output for the next two years. While sympathising with those affected in the matter on the other side Mr. Jones said that it would help Hew Zealand to solve the meat problem.

To give them an idea of the seriousness of the drought he said that he passed over large stretches of country, of which he could not tell the grassed from the ploughed lands, so similar were they in appearance.

He also traversed large areas of what was obviously rabbit-ridden country, yet there was not a sign of a rabbit to !>• seen.
