CAVALRY ROUND DUBLIN.

"SOVIETISM" AT LIMERICK.

DUBLIN, May 24.

Large bodies of cavalry have taken up strategic positions practically encircling Dublin. They were traversing the main roads throughout the night, accompanied by motor-lorries carrying police and infantry.

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Rose has warned Irish agriculturists that agitation in Ireland is aiming at a workers' republic which will deny the right of private property. An example of this policy was afforded when Sinn Feiners seized a number of. creameries at Limerick, which were renamed "Soviet creameries."' These were run for a week under the Irish "Republican" flag. Only when a wages dispute was settled were the owners permitted to resume occupation.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) Sir Hamar Greenwood, Chief Secretary of Ireland, denies a statement published in the "Sunday Times" that indirect negotiations are proceeding between the Government and Sinn Fein, the Government endeavouring - to ascertain the minimum terms of settlement demanded by Sinn Fein.

The "Sunday Times" declares that tlie Roman Catholic Church desires a settlement with Sinn Fein, 'being alarmed at the growth .of Bolshevik sentiments among the Labour section of the movement.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)

A reconstitution of the personnel at Dublin Castle is announced. Sir John , Anderson, chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue, has been appointed Under-Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant jointly with Mr. James MacMahon, while Mr. A. W. Gope,- director-general of organisation in" the Ministry of Pensions, succeeds Sir John James Taylor as Assistant Under-Secretary. Both appointments are temporary. Sir John James Taylor is retiring on the completion of a long period of service. He has* been appointed an Irish Privy Councillor.—(A. and N.Z. and Eeuter.)
