DESPICABLE METHODS.
FALSE PBETEXCES CHARGE.

An unusual case was heard in the • Magietrate's Court at Wellington on Saturday, before E. Page, S.M., when a tailor named Herbert Henry Workman pleaded guilty to charges at obtaining mone"y from Johiin Theodore Jorgensen, manager of the firm of J-. T. Lewis, Ltd., by means of a false pretence.
The accused, who was successful in securing nearly £20 from the informant, did co by enlisting the sympar lilies of slr. Jorgensen, -who was -led to believe- by the defendant, who went to him with tears in his eyes, that Workman's wife had died and that tihe defendant had not the ihoiiey to provide ier witb. a decent burial.
• The employece of Lewis, Ltd., were touched with the distressing circumstances' of Workman, qnd in order to show their Bympathy subscribed awl ..purchased, a wreath whioh was taken to Workman's residence. The bearer of the wreath wae invited into the 'house to sec the coffin,- but the invitation was not accepted.
.Utr. Jorgenecn stated that he. discovered that accused's wife was not dead.
In reply to a question Iby the Magißtrate, counsel for accused etsted that Workman spent the . money in drink, with the help of bis friends. Workman was admitted to probation for three year 3, and ordered to keep from intoxicating liquor 'during that period. The magistrate eaid. the case was one of 'borrowing, not theft. Another matter for consideration lvas the accueed's family.
