The Wanganul Boxing Association held a carnival last evening, tbe principal attraa. tion being the bantamweight profeasioMi championship between C. Cann, 8.4}, aml W. Oliver, 8.3}, fifteen three-miantw rounds, the former winning by a knock-eat in tbe sixth round. In the first round Cann did most of tkt leading, but Oliver was not idle, although there was, not a great deal of fig-ting. T_» , second three minutes say. Cann condone to do tbe better work, though Oliver wo i taking things very' coolly, scoring prlnctpaUy with straight lefta to the face. Cast kept at his man in the third, scoring frt_r with both hands, and once Oliver went te his knees, but -was up again lnmiediaMT, Cann's punches appearing to have very ttttu, effect. In the fourth Cann kept •eoriac freely, tooth at out and infighting, sod «oce Oliver was down, 'but it was only from a wrestle and not from pn__hment. Olrnr was very slow in nettling to fcls work. Oliver took a lot of pnnlsbme—t in the Ana round, and Cann getting home a ne_rj right to the stomach, OUver went down, ; and it looked all over, but he was able te rise at nine, and hong on till the goat, , which went a few seconds later. UO—t ! came on apparently fresh for the Blxt_, tit Cann soon got to work, and a heavy right , had Oliver down for eight. _te rose agala and commenced to mix it, but Cann vat too strong, scoring again with a right and '■ left to the bead, knocking Oliver t&Tonga, tbe ropes, and he was unable to continue, Cann winning on the knock-out. OUver"* display was somewhat disappointing, bat Cann gave.a good exhibition of clean twohanded fighting, and tally earned _j victory. In the preliminaries Stewart beat Taylor in the fly .weights, after an even bout. Is the bantams Howe beat Sid. Cann in thitt rounds, the towel coming from the latter"! corner. A good bout, although both wen inclined to wrestle, was that In which G. Stanley gat tbe decision over iP_UUps after five evenly-contested rounds. A willtt. bantam contest was that between Othtrarr and Kurth, the latter practically knocking his opponent ont towards the end of tbt third round, tbe referee stopping the boat' Tbe light weights -homes and Lee -o_A the six scheduled rounds, an interests!! bout seeing the former finish the stronger, and get a well-earned decision.
