HOUSEHOLD ORDERLIES.

"Tho Pioneer," the .women's club in Wellington, is not only a social centre, but also eminently practical in its methods nnd outlook. A meeting of the Household Orderly Association recently formed in Weßugton with a view to doing something to solve the domestic help problem «as held recently. Dr. Agnes Bennett, was voted to the chair, and there were also present .Lady Stout, lady Findlay, Miss Greenwood, Mrs. L. O. H. Tripp. Mrs. Ernest Haddeld, Mrs. A. Crawford, Mrs. Porter, Mrs. Corliss, Mrs. L. > e ).s° n > Mrs. Henry Hall, and Mr*. H. Kirkcaldic.

Dr. Bennett outlined to. the meeting the offer that had been received through Mesws. Gray and Cracroft (Auckland) of the property known as Bishopscourt, at Kelbiirn. This property had been offered at a rental of £100 a year, with a purchasing clause of £3200; £500 to be paid down and the remainder at tf per cent, for five years. Dr. Bennett stated that as time went on a good many girls and women would be arriving from Great Britain, and their numbers would in all probability include several who had belonged to the W.A.A.C., the W.E.A.F., and other bodies of organised women, who would he ready to go in for tills work and so supplement the numbers of New Zealand Women, should not enough of the latter come forward. In 'any case, she (lid not think there need be any fears as to tho financial aspect of the hostel, as failing the household orderlies they would always, bo able to 11 the ihostel with. Training College students and girls anxious to come to town to attend the University. At the Women Students' Hostel they iliad to refuse many applicactr for admission owing to lack of accommodation. That, at least, was perfectly certain: failing the one the hostel could he rilled with students, so that }ts financial standing was assured.

. The hostel for the household orderlies will provide accommodation for 23, including the staff, and they will be asked to pay at the rate of 23/ a week. The rate of pay to an orderly is expected to be 42/ a week, though this apparently is not yet fully decided upon, and is subject "to certain conditions. With their experience of the Students' Hostel and its management to draw upon, those members of the Household Orderlies' Association >who are also members of the Students' Hostel Council'have been able £o arrive at a good working basis as io the running of a hostel for the household orderlies.
