CONCILIATION BASIS.
OF THE RAILWAY PACT. WELLINGTON, this day. A member of the Amalgamated Society of Railwaymen's executive! describes the tribunal for the investigation of the railwaymen's grievances as true conciliation. The A.S.R.S. and Officers' Institute have agreed to refer their claims for increased wages, future and retrospective, to a commission consisting of three representatives nominated by the Railway Department and each society respectively, there being a. different tribunal for each society. The undertaking is that the Government and the parties will mutually agree upon a chairman. This tribunal is to be set up within seven days, and the Amalgamated Society has already made some representations regarding its personnel. An endeavour ■will be made to have an interim report on •wages, owing to the protracted dispute with the enginemen. Mr. Massey is unable at present to name his representatives, but it is certain that something will be done this week. Meanwhile the A.S.R.S. executive is continuing its usual quarterly meeting in Wellington. It reports that ajl its men are back at work, and there ha 3 been no trouble over resumption. One of the terms was that no railwayman be victimised for refusing duty, either before the Amalgamated ordered the strike or afterwards.
