I . ■ . j CAPTAIN E. J. THOMAS. | An energetic worker in the interests .|of the Navy League, Captain Lbun J 11 Thomas, late R.N., died last evening, 1, aged sixty-two years. For the last eight • . years Captain 'ihoruas tilled the position of house manager at Auckland Hospital .He was a native of Wale., and entered! - the Xavy as a youth, being appointed j .. to the paymaster's staff. Later he was | assistant paymaster on H.M.s. Wol- I . | vcrine, on the Australian station. Upon ] j; retiring from the service (apt. Tbomas _ obtained a secretarial nosition under the j Government of Xew South Wales. When ( I the South African war broke out he . was given a captain's commission in the i Imperial Forces, and in that capacity j.paid oIT the returning Australian troop- ] ers. Coming across to Xew Zealand, ; Captain TJiomas was for a time in the I Treasury Department, Wellington, from which he resigned to become an account- | j ant in the City Engineer's Department, ! Auckland. That position he gave up to take office as house manager at the ) 'hoepital. Captain Thomas acted for '! some time on the council of the Sailors' • Home, was a member of the Auckland 1 j Bowling Club, and president of the local i branch of the Xavy League throughout the war. Deceased is survived by his ;; widow and a married daughter, who ' | resides in Christchurch.. The interment s j takes place at Purewa Cemetery to-mor-row afternoon. 1 ... J
