SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORT.

Newton.—At the annual examinations the 'head masters of both schools were complimented 'by the inspectors on the excellent record of the scholars. The Minister ot Education has authorised the Board to school site. There are 1556 pupils on the roll of the schools. The report referred to the retirement of Mr. Walker, headmaster as follows:—"During the term he hail charge the results have been simply marvellous, and the scholarships obtained a record to he proud of." The expenditure for 14 months totalled £514 8/6. together with a special grant of £10 O/3. The balance In bank on March 1 was £40 11/9. PONSONBV. The report of the Ponsonby Committee states the schools have beeu well kept to the front, and important provision ha* been made for present and, "future reQulre— nients in respect to extra accommodation, and larger play grounds. A grant was made by the Department for a new brick school for use next year. Five acres adjoining Baylield school have been acquired, whlcS will be an ideal site. Three acres were secured adjoinincr Ponsonby school nntx 1 Richmond Road school playground Is also to be a-dded to. The receipts totalled £»32 IS/8, and the expenditure left a credit In hand of £11 5/7. DEVONPORT. The committee report that the new school at Vauxhall had relieved the congestion in the other schools. The new building at Vauxhall is to accommodate 230 pupils. Work of construction has been slow owing to scarcity of labour an 4 material. The report thanks the Maynr (Mr. H. S.
