Cable.) TENNIS TOURNAMENT. SYDNEY, January 22. The Australian tennis championship tournament opened to-day in dull weather with occasional showers. The Davis Cup court was used. The preliminary rounds of the singles and doubles championships of Australia were played. Anderson, Brookes, and Patterson comfortably defeated their local opponents (A. and N.Z. Cable)
ANTHRAX IN BRUSHES. / MELBOURNE, this day. A proclamation which has been issued prohibits the importation of brushes or toiflet articles manufactured from the hair of animals in Japan unless they are accompanied by a certificate from the Health Officer that they are free from disease. This measure has-been taken as a result of the recent disclosures of the occurrence of anthrax.—(A. and . N.Z. Cable.) •
