FIVE-HOUR FIGHT.
SINN FEINERS ATTACK BARRACKS. A REGtrtAK SIEGE. fßy Cable.— rress Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, January 22. One hundred and fifty armed men made a determined attempt to capture the police barracks near Thurles, in the south of Ireland. A fusillade of bullets in the front and rear of the building marked the opening of the attack at nice o'clock on Sunday night. Two dynamite bombs were exploded under the barracks, damaging the flooring. The garrison of 13 police took up their positions, replying briskly to the rifle shots. The shooting lasted for from four to five hours. The steel window shutters were dented and pierced in many places. There were no casualties on either side, except that several police suffered slight cuts from flying fragments. Reinforcements of police and soldiers arriving found all the roads in the neighbourhood barricaded with felled' trees. When they reached the barracks the attackers had gone. Three uncxploded bombs were found in the precincts. The raiders captured and held two of the police as prisoners during the attack. A delegation from the Parliamentary Labour party, including Mr. A. Henderson, Mr. W. Adamaon, and Mr. J. R. Clynes, has gone to Ireland to investigate the political situation.—(A. and N.Z.) POLICE OFFICER REPORTED SHOT. (Received 8 a-m.) NEW YORK, January 22. It is reported from Dublin that Mr. Redmond, Assistant Commissioner of Police, has been shot dead.—(A. and N\Z. Cable.)
