ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL.
,An St. Patrick's Cathedral, after 11 o clock on t>uuuay, exposition ot the Blessed Sacrament took place, and continued until Vetera. Lar«e numbers during the afternoon visited cue Cathedral. In the evening the church was crowueu. The Very ißev. M. J. O'ltelUy, CM., 'Hector of tit. Johns College connected with the Sydney University, delivered an eloquent and striking sermon, taking as his text: "Where is He that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen Ills star in the East, and have come to adore Him. And King Herod hearing this was troubled, and all Jerusalem with ■him." The preacher showed plainly the cause or Herod's trovcl.ie and forebodings. Like Herod we were passing through troublous times. The Governments of onr day were troubled. Ueligion. so long as It was ornamental ami convenient, was tolerated, but when it crossed the paths of men's amhitlons and desires religion was not wanted. The prevalent sins of race suicide, divorce, and banishment of God from the school were pom-trayed by the preacher. If we continue in the practices of these evils we were most assuredly hut preparing these countries for the yellow Taccs in the years to come. Ancient Rome, pagan taough It was. for three hundred years knew" not divorce, but on its introduction that mightyempire decayed, and was in consequence linally obliterated. So great was the work In our divorce courts that newjudges had been appointed to cope with the work. One read with horror and alarm the vile and nauseous proceedings in those courts. The Church sought to correct these vices in the name of Him who was born King of the Jews, hence Herod was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. We had passed 'In the last five years through a war of 'horrors, and the world talked loudly of reconstruction. No reconstruction wonld be 'beneficial or lastins unless Christ was made the basis of tne new edifice. The sermon was listened to with very marked attention and interest by the vast concourse. Procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the Cathedral followed. The Sacred Host was borne under rile canopy by the Very Rev. Father Piston, Rector of Holy Cross Seminary. Dunedin. Tho high altar was resplendent in lights and colours, colours.
