TECHNICAL TEACHERS.
YESTERDAY'S CONFERENCE. IMPORTANT REMITS CARRIED AT ANNUAL. MEETING. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers' Association, continued on Tuesday at the Wellington Technical College, the follow, j ing remits, the majority of which provoked keen discussion, were considered and carried:— , "That all teachers in technical schools who are engaged for not leas than 20 hours per week, whether employed directly or indirectly by the education boards, shall %c eligible to vote at the election of members of the Council of Education." "That this association places on record Hon. Mr. Hanah to the cause .of education during his term of office as Minie ter of Education." "'That full daytime education he compulsory up to tile age of sixteen yeans."' "That except in country districts, all boys and girls shall, between the ages of 1C and 18, receive daytime instruction ,for not less htan eight hours a week for 30 weeks a year." "That, in order to correlate and systemise the teaching of agriculture throughout Xew Zealand, a conference consisting of representatives of the following be held:— !' (a) Agricultural instructors. (b) Directors of technical schools. i< (c) Supervisors of manual training. | (d) Ofiicials of the Agricultural and; l Education Departments. (c) Successful practical farmers from the various of the Dominion. "That students leaving the primary schools be directed as to their futurt ! course of education —such directions to be made by a email advisory committee —after taking into consideration the probable future vocation of the child." I "T/hat a syllabus of work, similar to | that used in primary schools, be drawn ] up for technical schools, and, with a j view to giving grcnter weight to tech- 1 nicnl school certilicates, a Board of Ex- ' aminers be set up." I ''That provision be made for the adequate training in teaching of assistants in technical schools." i "That trade apprentices be required to attend technical classes and receive | training therein during the period of,' apprenticeship for at least one-half day I per week." "That the Minister of Education oe asked to increase the capitation to manual training classes, and that this association respectfully nrges that the capitation he made up to at least El." "That the Minister of Education be asked to pay the maintenance grant of £500 now paid to technical pehooLj to all technical schools where day classes are carried on, and the director is giving his whole time to the work of the I school." I "That separate representation on the Council of Education be given to technical school teachers and boards of governors." "That paragraph 4 of the regulations for attendance at continuation and technical classes gazetted May 15th, 191fl, is unworkable, inasmuch as the compulsory course laid down prevents sufficient attention being given to the wishes of the parents or the needs of the child." "That power be put in the hands of education hoards and managers of technical and secondary schools to prohibit certain children from employment out of school hours; and that no child should be employed for more than eight hours per day, inclusive of school hours." "That the principle of the co-ordina-tion of all grades of education be affirmed —and that the institution of one controlling authority in each district for all State-controlled "schools and colleges be approved ns a step in this direction. "That the president and the secretary of the executive of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers' Association re resident in one centre or district." "That a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Technical School uical School Teachers' Association be resiber of each year to consider remits to he forwarded to the annual meeting of the X.Z.E.1."
