CLAIMS FOR RENT.
In the Magistrate's Court, before Air frn tW* SJL ' Geor S e William Velly Littlejohn (Mr. F. D. McLiver) sued Patrick O'Shea (Mr. Durham). This was a claim to recover £3 1/3 for rent oi a tenement at 13/ per week. The evidence showed that plaintiff purchased the house at auction. The tenant was tHen paying 13/ per week. The plaintiff raised the rent to 16/ per week. Defendant questioned whether that could be done under the existing law. Defendant was then given notice, and the point was raised as to whether plaintiff wanted the house for his own use. The plaintiff stated he had rooms in the house, but let other portions to a returned soldier. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £3 1/3, admitted to be due, with costs. J. H. Hannan v. George Reed. This was also a claim to recover £1 16/ rent alleged to be due. The defendant put in as a set-off a claim for repairs effected to the house, which he said had been passed by the inspector. Mr. Hannan said an inspector who would pass sucli work must be an ass. Defendant stated that he was authorised to do certain work by Mr. Hannan. Plaintiff, in reply, swore that he never authorised defendant to do repairs to the premises. He also said he never allowed tenants to deduct from rent for work done without his authority. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed.
