TREATY DEADLOCK.
COMPROMISE IMPERATIVE. DEMANDED BY NATION. (Received 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. November 20. The Senate's rejection of the Treatyplaces both parties in a peculiar position. Senator Hitchcock, leader of the Democratic party in the Senate, worked hard to defeat the Treaty with Senator Lodge's reservations, while Mr. Lodgewas determined not to accept the Treaty if it did not contain the reservations. The Treaty can now be "nitrcrcVuced at next session of the Senate, which opens on December 1. It is considered certain that President Wilson will then re-intro-duce the Treaty. Mr. Lodge recently declared that he desire,l to" make the fate of the Treaty an issue at tho national elections, but other prominent Republicans disapprove of this course. They state that they are confident that the Treaty will be ratified before Christmas on a basis of a compromise satisfactory to botli parties, which they believe .Mr. Wilson intends to submit. Both parties now realise that the country's desire for the ratification of the treaty in some form or other makes compromise imperative.— (A. and N.Z.)
