BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the llirkenliead Borough Council was held last night. The .M.-i vor (Mr. J as. P. Mcl'liaili presided, nnd Councillors Albert lladlicld, Kobt. Webb. E. C. Walton. Itobt Taylor, John 11. Mcl'bail. Percy C. Backhouse, A. E. Wood, and 11. Itoaid.i.an were also present. Ferry Time-table.—The Mayor stated that the Improved Friday evening ferry service would commence Ibis week, tbe Devonport Steam Ferry C.yupnuy having agreed to run n hulf-hotii'iv service on Friday nnd Saturday evenings. The company wrote with respect 1,, the suggestion that the o p.m. vehicular boat from Auckland should leave at 4.30 p.m., that this would disarrange preceding trips, aud could not be given effect to, owing to the inconvenience that would (.thciwise ensile. lm llie liiollon of Councillor lladlicld. seconded by Councillor Wood, it was rei-.ilv.d to write thanking the company for the extension of the halfhourly service to Friday evenings, the opinion being expressed that this concession would mean a fairly good improvement in the service. Leave of Absence.—A cablegram having been received from Melbourne from Councillor IC. G. Skcates, applying for leave of absence for the next two meetings, this wnx grunted. Works.—The foreman of works reported that various IJiikdale roads hud been funned and rolled with the steam Toad Water Extensions.—The estimate for tbe proposed extension of the water services In the Hirkdale district were given at £1007 for ltangit mi Itoad and . £81 for Walroa .Avenue.
