A VERY SINGULAR CASE.
A meeting of the creditors of Vere Singh, an old Hindu hawker, of Rotorua, was held at the Official Assignee's office yesterday afternoon. The debts were assessed'at .£133, and the assets as .nil. liankrupt did not appear, and Mr. Fisher read a letter stating that the Hindu was lying ill at Rotorua. In his statement bankrupt stated that he was OC years of age, and for fourteen years had been hawking drapery and soft goods ; through the North Island. Recently his horsert which had been used in the 'business died, and lie himself became ill. There was about £30 due to him on goods allowed on credit to Maoris, but as he had not kept a very strict account of their names ho could not make any offer. The creditors expressed the opinion that the bankrupt, though not himself a dishonest man, had come under the influence of another Hindu, and steps had been taken to prevent the couple leaving the country. DoMbts were expressed as to whether Singh was as poor as lie made out. It was decided to subpoena the bankrupt to attend another meeting to be held in Auckland on Wednesday.
