PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS.

ROSKILI* AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE.

Mr. F. W. Peddle, who recently advertised himself as an independent candidate for the Roskill seat, addressed a rather small meeting of electors in St. Alban's schoolroom, Dominion Road, last evening. Mr. C- Hudson presided, in his capacity of Mayor of Mount Eden. Mr. Peddle explained that he was a farmer, and a resident of tho district for four years. His political platform, he considered to be midway between the two extremes in politics. He had leanings towards Labour, and favoured the abolition of monopolies and the nationalisation of a number of industries. He favoured the freehold, but was opposed to land aggregation, and other planks in his platform were compulsory acquisition of idle lands, adequate land and sea defence. Imperial preference, and prohibition. At the close of his address the candidate declared that he was willing to stand down in favour of any able man who would take his place, as personally he was not anxious to go* further. A motion was carried asking him to contest the seat, and he consented to do "so. In answer to a question he stated that in the event of a no-confidence motion he would support neither Mr. Massey nor Sir Joseph Ward. GREY LYN:;. George Fowlds, Independent Liberal candidate for Grey Lynn, held last evening in St. Barnabas' Hall, a strong and representative committee was formed to promote the candidate's interests in the Mount Eden portion of the electorate.
