Drink was given a;i the cause of the fall of a Swede named Alex Petersen, aged 4!) years, who pleaded guilty at tho Thames to a charge of breaking and entering, and came up this morning at the Auckland Supreme (?ourt for sentence, before Mr. Justice Stringer. The Hon. J. A. Tole, Crown Prosecutor, c.nid the accused was a good worker but was addicted to drink, and had spent on liquor the value of a property worth dEOOO, which he sold three years ago. The charge to which he pleaded guilty was of breaking into a butcher's shop, nnd stealing a small amount of meat.' The only other thing agaiint the man. was that he had been convicted of sup-1 plying natives with liquor for consump- i tion off the premises. Drink seemed to lie hU only trouble. The Judge: He has apparently been living in the district for fourteen years i and has borne a good character up till now. It is very hard, to imagine what made him commit this theft. The only thing against him otherwise is this of supplying natives with liquor. Prisoner said he knew nothing about the liquor in that case. He neither saw nor handled it, though it was sent out for a tangi. I I lis Honor said he did not like eendj the man to gaol, and remanded him till the 10th of November in order that the I rrobntion Officer might furnish a report. ; "Another fortnight may not do him any harm," said hi* Honor, "it may help lo I get rid of the effects of the drink." The | accused was told that if he were ad- , ffiiUed. to probation one of the conditions would bo that lie. would, have to be i prohibited.
