ROAD AND BRIDGES

THE AUCKLAND VOTES. The votes for roads, bridges, etc., as set out in the Public Works Statement, appears to be fairly satisfactory to most of the local bodies'c-onccrned, but owing to the large number of items and the complication of matters by votes carried over from last year, it was impossible to find out the exact position to-day. An exception is the Manukau County, whose list is a very short one, and indicates a rather severe cutting down. The County Council asked for £ for £ subsidies on its big tarred road schemes, but only one vote appears in respect of these —£1000 (a first instalment of £2000) for the Papakura-Clevedon Road. This work was estimated by the Council to cost £-12,000, and £0000 was asked for. It is understood that there is a possibility of a vote for tho Mangere Road improvement scheme in the Supplementary Estimates. One item in the Hobson County votes is £1000 (on account of £2000) for the bridge across the Northern Wairoa River at Dargavillo. This bridge, which will be 23 chains long, is estimated to cost £25,500. This sum will probably be divided equally amongst the Dargaville Borough Council, the Hobson County Council, and the Government. The first two arc raising a £17.000 loan for their share of the work. The £1000 vote is expected to suffice for the Government's share during the current financial year. Tlie bridge will be of steel and wood, on ferro-concrete piers, and will have a swing-span.
