CHESS.

The telegraphic chess match, Aucklant v. Otago, was continued at the Auckland Chess Club last Saturday evening. Play commenced soon after 6.30, and although most of the games appeared fairly even at the adjournment, as the evening advanced it became pretty evident that the Otago players were to prove too strong for the local team. Auckland drew first blood, Allen capitulating to Senior at board 12, just after the supper adjournment. Soon after this, however, Sim, No. 10, and Putman, No. 13, began to get into difficulties, and the Otago players, pushing the attack, scored a win at these two boards. At board 9 Hemus made a blunder, and had to strike his colours to Amtman. Coyle, No. 7, lost a piece early in the game, and although he foughfhard, was unable to recover, and eventually resigned to Myers. Pickett, No. 3", with a good game, made a bad mistake, enabling his opponent at the other end to announce mate in a few moves. Barker, No. 14, held his own, and shortly before the close of play secured the second win for Auckland. Play ceased soon after 11 o'clock, seven of the games being still unfinished. As is usual in these matches, the games uncompleted at the second sitting will be decided byi adjudication, and the positions have been sent to the Wellington Adjudication Board. Until the decision of the board comes to hand the actual result of the match will not be known, but it is certain that the Auckland Club has suffered defeat. It is unfortunate that the Auckland Club was not able to put in a stronger team for this match, but arrangements were made rather hurriedly, and one or two of the best players in the club were unable to put in an appearance. The Otago Club has some strong players, and in the event of a return match being played, the locsclub will have to strain every effort £ order to secure a favourable verdict. I
