Though the railway construction t< policy indicated in the Public Works v Statement aims at the completion of d works in' hand, the Government pro- o poses to authorise some extensions, in- i: eluding a 40-mile addition to the North c Auckland Main Trunk line, from the a left bank of t'iie Wairoa River to a con- i nection with the existing line near Nga- t puhi, also construction of a branch line v from the Main Trunk at Otorohanga r along the Waipa River for eight miles, r and a 15-mile branch from Dnrgaville a through Kaihu Valley into Mangaru g district. I A strong demand for an improved rail ( outlet from Wellington into Manawatu is met by the authorisation of a six-mile T deviation of the existing line from Plim- ' merton to Paekakariki. ' The only South Island new work ap- s pears to be a short deviation of the '■ Midland railway, near Springfield. ° ' 1
