POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M.) * SOMETHING TO PAWN. Walter Nicholson Scott, alias Henry I' Nicholson Jones (31), was charged that I' he stole a gladstone bag and contents, '! value £4 10/, from the railway station \ on Monday evening. ' A passenger wh(» landed from the Rotorua express, Laurie i j\\ ebber, gave his gladstone bag to a I carter to take to an hotel, and also I handed the carter a ticket to get more i luggage. The carter, Marshall, put the ! bag in his cart, and went for the rest : of the luggage. When he returned the ' bag was gone from the cart, but one like it, without any address tag, was i on the platform, ana accused was hover- j : ing in the vicinity. Marshall sent for j • _a constable, but kept his eye on accused, who picked the bag up and was walking away with it when the constable ■ came along. The bag proved to be Web- ' ber's, minus the address tag, and accuseil ■ said a man had asked him to carry trie : bag to the Waverley Hotel. Next morning the tag was found under some rubi bish close to where the bag had been picked up. Accused said a man vrho was -wheeling, 1 a bicycle had asked him to carry the i . bag to the Waverley Hotel for* two , shillings, and he was on the -way when I . stopped by the constable. The other man had then gone. ' Accused was convicted and remanded j till Tuesday for sentence, the police , \ desiring an opportunity to make | ( inquiries concerning a bundle of pawn . tickets found in the man's pockets when . lie was arrested. t FIELD LANGUAGE BARRED. J George Keenan, a young man, adm.it- - 31 ted having used obscene language in a ! M railway carriage at Taumaruuui on May j 5 1 23. It -was stated that Keenan was \ c travelling from Wellington to Auckland i ' on a soldier's pass in May, and was > rather rowdy and drinking from a bottle. 3 Someone took exception to the drinking c on account of the presence of ladies, r and Keenan made use of very bad r language. On reaching Auckland he dis--3 appeared, and had only recently been • found occupying the position- of steward 1 on an intercolonial ship. At the time | 3 of the offence he had just returned from \ ' three years' active service, and was 8 under the influence of drink. c Keenan was convicted an<l ordered to 1 come up for sentence when called on, a \ 1 condition being that he should take out s a prohibition order. SAW A MAN ABOUT A DOG. A sale in the street of a Pomeranian c dog resulted in William L. Scott (32), a ' 0 seaman, recently returned from service 3 with the Australian Forces, being; - 1 charged with the theft of the dog. The j >' "Pom.." which was valued at eight' t guineas, strayed from its owner's pre- • ! > mises, and the following day a man who i '" saw Scott and some others grouped | c about the little pet in High Street offered c £1 for it, and Scott sold it. claiming' a that the dog was his. Some days later ! c the original owner recognised the ani-, t mal with its new owner, and a constable j n hunted Scott up, and interviewed him. c He said he merely sold it for a man who c had met him in the street and asked v him to sell it. He did not know the djman, but got 10/ out of the sale. On o\ Scott's behalf, Mr. R. E. Matthews made d a plea that the man be given a chance to use his passport back to Australia, where he said he had a job to return toj He was under the influence of drink on c the day he sold the dog. 1.1 Pcott was remanded on bail till Tues-' o ! day for sentence. pending police c inquiries as to his statements concerning c himself. | p MISCELLANEOUS.
