EFFECT ON AMERICAN TRADE. (Received 10.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 22. The .Shanghai correspondent of the United Press Association says that tin ; American Chamber of Commerce and tin American Association passed a joint resolution emphasising the grave dangei to American interests if Japan should retain Shantung.— The New York "Times"' Tokyo corre spondent says that the United .State.-ex-Senator Burton, in a speech in Tokyo said that what America asked Japan ii the Orient was a fair field in competitioi for trade, and that no policy of aggres sion toward other countries should b( adopted. America only asked that n< political control or special privileges should exclude her from ports or trade Japan should do everything possible t< avoid the spirit of imperialism which ha< so disturbed the world.—(A. and N.Z.)
