For fourteen rounds Driscoll gave a superb [ display of both offensive nnd defensive , lighting, winning every round. ' Driscoll avoided many dangerous ) punches, but had clearly weakened. The sixteenth round had only gone half a minute when Driscoll's seconds threw in the sponge. Only a man of great stamina could have lasted as Driscoll, whose defeat was as glorious as his j , many victories. Matt Wells, the English lightweight, defeated Kid Carter, the American lightweight, on points after 20 rounds. Carter had the better of the fighting in tho opening rounds. Wells swinging his punches instead of» delivering them direct. Carter inflicted several upper- , cuts. A change came in the ninth round, in which Wells boxed at a great rate, j 1 hooking his opponent severely. Wells, i ■ in the tenth round, fought as he did in | ' his amateur days, delivering admirable j ■ straight lefts.
