SOLDIERS' GRATUITY.
AUSTRALIAN SCHEME. 1/6 A DAY IN BONDS. PARTIAL REDEMPTION FROM ' INDEMNITY. (Received 11.4- a.m.) i BRISBANE, this day. 1 .Mr. Hughes, speaking at a welcome, 1 said that the Government proposed to pay soldiers n wur gratuity of 1/6 per day in bonds, bearing interest at 4_ per rent., not negotiable and not transferable. Special arrangements would be made for redemption in rase of hardship. The German indemnity would be paid before May next, and would be used to redeem from 20 to 40 per cent. of the value of the bonds, which would then be c paid in ranh. The scheme will involve a 1 linbilitv of --3,0-0,000 to £25,000,000.— r (A. uij N.Z. Cable.)
