THE SPRING MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY'S RACING. The concluding day's racing in connection with the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting took place at Alexandra. Park this afternoon. _H| weather was flue and there was a large attendance. The track was in good order. Results:— ELLERSLIE TROT HANDICAP (Harness), of loOsovs. One mile and a-halt.. •Mr. F. Goya began well, followed by Turo Hewl and Thntiell, the latter being in charge as they went along tbe back, followed by Turo Hewi, .Mintonette, Welcome South and Guava, while Aranul was making up her ground very fast. Passing the stand _mibell was still the pilot, but Aranul was within a couple of lengths, with Mintonette next, aud Turo Hewl heading the others. Going along the back the last time Aranul went to rhe front, and from that out the issue was never in doubt, the favourite winning, puling up, -by 40yds from Tlmbell, which was 00yds In front 0 "" Mintonette. The Walkato Trotting Club, at a meeting last night, decided to Increase stakes by £250, making the total £1250, including: Introductory Handicap. £80: Claudelands Handicap, £100; Cup, £325; Frankton Handicap, £115; Stewards' Handicap, £200; Railway Handicap, £120; Hamilton Handicap. £200; Farewell Handicap, £110. TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES. WELLINGTON, this day. At Trentnam this morning most of thu work was done on the tan. Teams of Mes6rs. G. Price, J. T. Jamleson, and L. Wilson, which arrived yesterday, Bprtnted, Hurry Up going better than Warplane at the end of four furlongs. Salr„» beat Nursing Sister over half a mile. Gloaming and other members of Mason's -team trotted and cantered In the middle of the, course. # A cowardly assault on a police constable, for which there was not the slightest justification, led to a young seafaring man, William Bates, being arraigned at Wellington on a charge of assaulting Constable Vivian Cosgrav« whilst the latter was in the execution of his duty on the Ferry wharf on Saturday night. The accused pleaded guilty. It appears that Constable Cosgrave was on duty at the wharf when the Mararoa took her departure for Lyttelton. The gangway -was \vp, and the steamer had receded some ten or twelve feet from the wharf, when the accused hurriedly arrived on the scene, and called out to some men on the vessel to throw him a rope. Bates, who it turned out was a member of the crew, apparently wanted to 'board the steamer, after he had been warned by a Harbour Board official not to make the attempt. Constable Cosgrave intervened, as to board the' ship in the manner proposed was a dangerous expedient, and while his attention was diverted the accused struck him a heavy blow on the back of with his fist from behind, felling him to the wharf. As the constable was rising- the accused struck him a second time. Bates was described as being perfectly foher at the time, but was very excited. His Worship fined the accused £10, with the option of fourteen days' imprisonment, and gave him till the end of the month to find the money. In connection with the case against Charles Cockery of having "attempted to procure certain persons to murder Detective-Sergeant Quirke," (says the "Hawera Star"), it is stated that thefts from business premises have been going on in Palmerston for some time past. Police investigations have tended to incriminate certain 'individuals with the transactions. They in turn have accused Cockery of having been party to these transactions, and with having harboured the stolen goods.
