ESTABLISHED AT AtTCKLAITD. MR. R. M. A-UGIE THE PROFESSOR. A proposal to establish a Chair of Law at the Auckland University College was finally adopted by the College t'ouneil yesterday afternoon, and Mr. R. M. Algie, who has been law lecturer at the college for a number of year?, was s appointed Professor of Law at a. salary j of £700 a year. The meeting of the c council was attended by Me-.-ers. T. \V. Leys (chairman), H. J. D. Mahon, T. U. l Wells, Dr. 11. B. Kamford, Professors J A. P. Thomas, 11. \Y. Segar, and C. W. j Egerton. The Educational and Law Committee, ( to which the matter had been referred , for u-onsidpra-tion, made the following re- ( commendations: —That a Chair of Law , be established, the profeesor to be ap-.i pointed at £700 a year, together with ;i\ , whole-time lecturer at t2oO a year; ( that the law subject* in the School ot ) Commerce be taken over by the School < of Law; that Mr. R. M. Algie, lecturer j in law, be appointed professor umle: 1 these conditions, and that the proposed ' lectureship be advertised. ■ The Chairman explained that hitherto 1 the law subjects involved in the examina- 1 tion for accountancy had been combined with the duties undertaken by Mr. Hem- 1 ingway, but these would now be trans- ■ I ferred to the Profeseor of A sum j'• of £ - 2T)O 11 year was thus made available '. towards the support of the Law School. The committee recommended further, : after having considered the question of ' the vacancy created by Mr. \Y. On the recommendation of the Educational Committee, it was decided to advertise for an assistant-lecturer in classics at a. salary of £200. and for a demonstrator in physics at a salary of Mr. V. R. Johns, who recently returned from active service, was re-appointed phycics mechanic.
