TWENTY SECTIONS ALLOTTED. AIfOXG 939 APPLICANTS. The offices of the Lands Department in Auckland are almost continuously nowadays the rendezvous of optimistic exservice men, whose ambitions to go on the land are dependent upon the smiles of that fickle Dame Fortune. An uncommonly large aggregation of these anxious applicants thronged into the Government Buildings this morning, having interest in the ballot for thirteen sections of lands described as "first-class" in the Piako county, Maungateparu Settlement, and another ballot for seven areas of secondclass country in the Wliakatane county at Matuku Settlement. Three of these latter areas were preference sections for married men. In all 939 returned soldiers sent in their names for one section or more, and the results of the balloting were as follows. G. McLeod, Waikino: section 30, 57 acres 1 rood 6 perches (57), K. J. McAufteld, Te Aroha; section 45 acres 1 rood 25 perches (37), W, J. Morris, Otakeho; section 35, 55 acres 0 roods 28 perches (66), R. A. Marshall, Wanganui; section 40, 03 acres 2 roods 9 perches (SI), B. J. Roper, Auckland; section 415, 50 acres 0 roods G perches (61), S. Hatton, Wellington. Matuku.—The applicants for the seven sections in the Matuku Settlement numbered IS7. Sections 1, 4 and 11 were available to married men only. The results of the ballot were: Section 1, 90 acres (22). R. A. Boyd, Frankton; section 2, 139 acres 2 roods 19 perches (18), H. O.
