"SPEED WILL WIN."
CARPENTIER PREPARES. COMING FIGHT WITH BECKETT. LONDON, September 6". The correspondent of the "Weekly Dispatch " at Paris states that Georges Carpentier (the French champion) realises that his coming contest with Joe ■Beckett (champion of Great Britain), for which he is beginning intense training, will be the hardest of his career. He says frankly: "It is clear that Beckett is a powerful fighter and a stubborn stayer."
The correspondent describes Carpentier as listening to his friends' vivid narration of the Beckett-McGoorfcy fight IJke an army intelligence officer hearing an important report on a battle.
Discussing the features of Beckett's smashing style, Carpentier said that he relies on his superior quickness and science to defeat the Englishman. He does not intend to vary his old style, but will improve it at every point.
The boxing contest between Joe Beckett and Eddie McGoorty, which was witnessed by 20,000 spectators, gave a tremendous fillip to boxing, and has raised the hope that England has at last produced a possible world's heavyweight champion.
