FREIGHTS TO VANCOUVER.
(By Telegraph. -Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Orago members intend taking up with the Government a question in which the ■whole South Island is interested. They wish the Oovernment, when framing the new contra-' for tiie Vancouver mail service, to stipulate for a fiat rate of freight from the principal '.oris of New Zealand to Vancouver, us they contend that the Southern ports of the Dominion are handicapped compared with Auckland, though the whole Dominion has a share in the payment of the subsidy. How the present system of rates operates is illustrated by charges made on a Dunedin consignment to Vancouver. It cost £-12 freight to Auckland, and £04 thence to Vancouver. The exporter contends tbat the £42 coastal freight is a handicap in favour of Auckland exporter.-.
