Mr. J. Woodhall has .been appointed Deputy-Mayor of Devonport. Major A. Cowles lias been re-elected president of the Soldiers' Club at Wairarapa.
i Sir Walter Buchanan is expected to return to Wellington from London by I the Corinthic, due on September 22. Captain and Mrs. K. S. Mncky (London), Captain H. G. Pohaine ((Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. S. Gi New-all (Singai pore), Mr. and Mrs. 11. lister (Hobart), ! Mr. D. G. Braik (Wanganui),' and Mr. I Allen (Bell (Kaitaia) are staying at I Cargen Hotel. Mr. 11. Gregory, who takes charge of I the physical department of the V.M.C.A. Auckland Branch, occupied a similar position at Petrograd. Three years ago /he returned to New Zealand, enlisted, and only returned recently from active service. Captain Esmonde Napier, M.C., arrived from Wellington yesterday. He I travelled with the contingent returned jby the s.s. Athenic, which reached Wel- '■ lington on Monday. Captain Napier's j war service dates from the day of the l declaration of war in August, 1914. He served for a year in Fort Cautley in the artillery, and was drafted to the infantry, leaving with the 20th Reinforcements, tile fought for some time with the trench mortars, and then was attached to the Auckland battalion. He ' was twice wounded. He won his MiliI tary Cuosa for capturing and holding a German strong position after his superior officer had become a casualty. Since the j armistice he has been a demobilising } oiiieer at Sling Camp. I
