ENGINEERS' BONUS.
AEBIT'RA'pION COURT DECIDES DISPUTE. The Arbitration Court has delivered its finding upon an application by the inspector of Awards at Auckland for an interpretation of the Northern District (except Gisborne) Engineers' award. A recent order of the Court awarded the engineers a bonus of 2*d. an hour. The question to be decided was whether the bonus should be paid on £.11 time worked, including overtime and work done on certain days specified in the award.
The Court's .answer is sis follows:—"ft was the intention of the Court that in computing the amount payable in respect of overtime worked, the bonus should be entirely excluded from the
computation, or, in other words, that the overtime should lie calculated as if no mention of the bonus appeared in the award, and this intention is clearly expressed in the order. The method of calculation contended for by the union obviously takes the bonus into account, and is, therefore, contrary to the terms of the order. The answer to the question submitted is 'that no bonus is payable in respect of time worked beyond the ordinary hours of work,"
