WASTE LANDS FOR SOLDIERS.
(By Telegraph.—rarliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The suggestion that the Government should acquire for soldier and general settlement land at present lying idle in the iWiaikato district, was made by a deputation which waited upon tho Prime Minister and Minister of Lands this morning. In the absence of Mr. Young through illness, the deputation was introduced by Messrs. Hornsby and D. H. Field. Jt was pointed out by speakers that whereas the Government was expending large sums in the pu'rchas° of 'highly developed and high priced lands it was neglecting land which, with a little labour, could be made to provide a very profitable return, 1 and aid in satisfying the cry for increasing production of the country. There, was much land of this description in the! Waikato. j
Mr. Massey pointed out that the Gov- : ernment must be guided by existing! legislation, and reports of its •mental officers. He, however, ivould take the whole matter into considera-l tion, and if it were placed before him in documentary form he would be glad to consider the purchase of any unimproved | block which it might he "fhought thej government could purchase profitably.
