A LEAKY MAIN,
SERIOUS WASTE OF WATEH.
PROBLEM AT EPSOM.
The wastage in the One-tree Hill watef supply, has occasioned much anxiety during the past twelve months, and the returns for the quarter just ended shows the leakage to be over 25 per cent of the water supplied by the City Council, and the revenue obtained from the amount registered by the Board's meters as distributed abongst ratepayers barely covers the initial cost of the supply.
The turncock's report submitted last night showed a deficit of 1,513,000 gallons, the quantity -of water supplied according to the City Council's meters beinc 7,326,000 gallons, while only 5,51 :?,000 gallons were accounted for by the Board's meters. The City Council receives £306 6/ for the last quarter's supply at the rate of 1/ per 1,000 gallons, while" the (Board reaped £367 10/S at 1/4 per 1,000 gallons. The maximum inevitable wastage in any drainage system is from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, and it was in recognition of this that the Board decided that steps to remedy their defective main were essential.
In reply to the chairman, Mr. H. Dobbie, the turncock stated that, though two leaks had been found, and remedied, the wastage indicated by the meter* had not been alleviated. He coa sidered that defective meters playel a big part in the problem, and urged that new meters should tie imported from England. Comparing ths merits of the two systems he stated that the meter system had the effect of limiting consumption as compared with the fixed charge on the basis o! valuation. In support of this, the consumption in the One-tree Hill district of 20 gallons per head, and of the city of 55 gallons per head, was instanced. - One member stated that evidently the only advantage of having the meters was that the Board had full .cognisance of the water they were losing, while other boroughs without them were in the dark in this respect. .
With the view of locating the crux of the trouble, the turncock was instructed to -make a further inspection of the main.
