(To the Editor.) Sir—Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., in Ms address to the Young Citizens' League, a few days ago, deprecated the fact that our present system of education is the cause of our social wrongs. He, with mc, contends that our education should • be good, physically, mentally and ; morally, but with this difference —it depends a great deal upon his construction j on the word morally. Surely Mr. Cutten j does not deplore the growing interest of j the parents in the welfare of their chil- t dren's school life. Right through Mr. ' Cutten's address there is. a strong ten-"j dency to deprecate the good or evil that j can *je wrought by environment, and ; especially that of the school. It must I always be remembered that the scholar j spend the best part of the day in the j schools, and their mind is very impressionable, especially in the mass. This is one very good reason why, with other teachings, that the pictures hung on the [ school ~ walls should be carefully i selected, always with the view of bringing out the "beautiful in life, and ever rejecting the sordid. I should like to nave seen Mr. Cutten describe what he would consider an ide?l system -of education, given in an ideal school. To-day •we hear vague generalities, and condemnation, but the kernel of the question , is never touched.
