CRISIS IN FAT STOCK.
SHORTAGE AND HIGH PRICES. Butchers who depend on the Westfield market for their supplies of fat stock continue to complain of extreme prices ruling. They point out that under existing conditions they are paying approximately Sd. per pound on the average for beef, while they are receiving only an average of OJd. a pound. This means a loss of £4 10/ to £4 15/ on every medium sized (7501b.) bullock purchased. They intend to renew their application to the Board of Trade for permission to increase the retail price of meat by Id. to 2d. per pound.
As a result of the scarcity of fat stock there has been a heavy reduction in the weekly output at the municipal abattoirs, AYestfield. The figures go to show that the number of pigs slaughtered was between SO and 00 for a recent week, as against an average of from 220 to 250 four years ago. The supply of mutton has decreased materially, and is now very low indeed.
