The death of Mr. .lames Peat at Kaino last .vcek. at the age of eighty, marks the passing away of a colonist of (10 years' standing. Coming to New Zealand from .Scotland when he was •>[) years of age, he went through all the stages of early pioneering life. lib was of rather a retiring disposition, and contented himself witli purely local politics as far as active participation went. The late Hon. John Hryce was a close pergonal friend. When farming near Waverley. in the Wanganui district, his house was ever open to all those who needed rest. Long before the days «f the railway, school inspectors, politicians, and all whose work called them far from home, found a hospitable welcome at his home. He possessed all the best qualities of the brainy, practical early settler. _,
