rAKAPUNA CLUB SUCCESSFUL. £G529 PAID IN TAXES. CONTEMPLATED IMPROVEMENTS. The annual meeting of the Takapuna lockey Club was held this afternoon, the f Hon. E. XV. Alison presiding. Moving the adoption of the report md balance-sheet, the chairman ] remarked that there had been a satisfactory season's racing under adverse •onditious. Two meetings were held, ' md each day's racing proved highly sue- ! ■essful from every standpoint. The total 1 stakes paid for tiot.li meetings amounted to .CTofitv. The. total revenue for the ' \?ar. including totalisator receipts and government war tax upon dividends and stakes amounted to £19,081 17/0. and ; the expenditure, including amount written off for depreciation of L'oOO. to £18.171 7/0, leaving a surplus of L9lO ' 10/3. TOTE UP £0000. The amount written oIT for deprecia- ; tion was an insufficient allowance, as in addition to the depreciation of buildings, plant and lencing, there was still an amount to clear off in connection with the old course, but it was as much as the committee considered could be allowed off the surplus for the year. Compared with the same number of days' racing, there was an increase in totalisator receipts of Tj.V.lSl! 1(1/, as against the previous year, the amount paid to the Government for taxes, including; totalisator tax and war taxes on divi- [ dends. stakes, privileges and amendment tax being L'ii.")2!l 1.1/. In addition to the Government taxes the sum of tM!l!l 7/.S was paid for local rates and land tax. Tho total taxes paid, viz., C 70211 2/8, amounted to within L'.Vill 17/4 .-' the total amount of stakes money paid by the club. The only other item detailed in the pro.it and loss account which called for special reference was the amount. CiH7 13/."., under the heading sundries, maintenance, and improvements. I he greater portion of this sum was for expenditure in connection with newstabling accommodation. which was urgently required, some forty new stalls having'been provided during the past vcar. It would be plea-ing to members to know that the attendances at the club's meetings constituted a record and to learn That the racing was exceptionally attractive and successful. This succc-s was due to the new racecourse, which hid been proved to be one of the best in New Zealand: the banking of the bends and the sinoothnc.-s ami dryness j of its surface being much appreciated.! The "hole surface of the course was; now covered with a splendid sward ot gras-. and was in tin- bes-t of good order. MnnlM-1-s would he gratified to know that the heavy expenditure in connection with the acquisition of the lan I purchased from the Auckland Harbour j Hoard, and in the construction of the course, had been fully justified. The large attendances at each day's ra in- ! hist year proved the necessity for increased public accommodation both in-1 , ide and outside the paddock a.ca. As j the elevated position of portion of the inside, and the whole of the .outside niea provide a natural grandstand, the committee was carrying out -in cxtcn-ive construction of concrete terraces bod inside and outside, chiefly outside, by which Toll!) extra people colll-.l be com j fort-ablv accommodated. Negotiations, extending over a considerable period, had been taking place between '-he club! and the Devonport Borough Council! with reference to exchanges of lands and'! leases and were now approaching com-j pletion. When given effect to. the; Council would have effected a marked public improvement, anil the club would |be enabled to enlarge the grandstand and saddling paddock areis, enlargements which would be much appreciated jb\ the club'- patrons. j ' l-T'RTHKR IMPROVEMENTS. The committee were now- considering ' a scheme of enlargement of the paddock 'area, and for the carrying out of inside [improvement's, and when t.ic-c weie tinallv approved they will be undertaken in the order of importance, and carried out as speedily as the funds of | the club will enable such being done I ~
