I • MARKETS FIRM. 1 FAMINE IN BRAN. A strong demand for produce and vege - tallies, together with a shortage in some . lilies, is keeping the market lirni. The extreme limit lias almost been reached in respect to bran, in connection with which there is a famine. Messrs. J. Braid and Co.'s sales on Thursday and Friday proved a big draw to farmers, who came in hundreds to be present at tiie sale of two thoui sand bales of wool packs. Most of them. '; however, were purchased by the merchants at prices that averaged out at 1.3/0 for 4S's. and from 4/5 to 5/ for 42's. j A large consignment of coffee and | chicory essence sold under keen demand. ■ I-'lottr and oatmeal also went off well, while 40 tons of potatoes were disposed :of at from £111 to £1 1 per ton. Unions in short supply made from 2JJ to 3d 1 per lb. Bacon -ides and oddments of bacon s.,ld at from Od lo 1/1 per lb. i An extra line consignment of turkeys -.made from I2\A> to 17/ for gobblers, .land S/ for hens. Several trucks of 'slightly inferior chaff lllangitikei) - ; maxle from £!<i 7/ to £10 10/ per ton, , while a Blenheim consignment made up to £13. Hats -old at from 4/0 to 5/(5 per bushel, and clipped seed 7/ per bushel. Hay ua< poor of demand, some excellent samples being passetl at from £.S to £S 10/. Straw made £7 per ton. and barley per bushel 0/0. Pollard found a ready market at 10/ per 1001b. Bran, which is practically at a famine in respect to supplier sold at late prices. ' There is every indication of high prices ruling for this produce within, the. next ; fortnight. There was an unprecedented demand for stone fruits, also citrus fruits, garden shrubs, and ornamental tree-. High prices ruled for all lines. Vegetables in short supply sold at high pric.-s. .Messrs. Car].enter Arthur and Co. held a very successful sale of vegetables yesterday. There was a strong demand with prices high. Carrots sold s from 1/0 to 2/ per dozen, parsnips 1/ to r 1/0 per dozen, beetroot 2/ to 2/15, let- - nice !)d to 1/ti, cauliflower (good) from s j "Id to 1/3 each. Rhubarb sold at from -fid to 1/ per bundle, and celery (best) from 3/4 to 4/2 per bundle, seconds from 1/S to 3/. Potatoes in very short supply sold at 13/ per cut. Onions made from f 2 ?.il to 3d per lb. swedes from 4/0 to 5/' .- new potatoes from 3id to 4ld per lb, 1 and pumpkins (in very short supply) from 4/6 to 4/ each. ,
